Grand Lake Neighborhood - Oakland
Hinging around the intersection of Grand Avenue and Lakeshore Avenue at the north end of Lake Merritt, the “Grand Lake” District features a number of ethnic restaurants, independent stores, and bars, along with established chain stores like The Gap and Blockbuster Video. The neighborhood is home to the Oakland Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings, a wonderful convergence of area farmers, bakers, and small-time restaurateurs. Walking around Lake Merritt is also a favorite pastime of neighborhood residents.

The neighborhood is perhaps best known for the Grand Lake Theatre, an art-deco classic that has become a regional landmark. The Grand Lake typically features five or six first-run movies at a time, with traditional old-time organ music prior to a number of weekend shows.
Homes in Grand Lake area have been rising in price due to Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown’s largely successful efforts to revitalize the area. By Oakland Hills standards, however, they remain affordable, and the proximity to such an urban environment appeals in particular to many first-time buyers.
