Sequoyah Hills Neighborhood - Oakland, California
The land on which Sequoyah Hills sits features an extensive, vibrant history. Originally a wilderness that was part of a land grant given to Luis Peralta by the Spanish, the neighborhood was largely taken over by squatters after the Gold Rush of the mid-19th century.
Two country clubs, Sequoyah and Oak Knoll, were founded in the early twentieth century, but only Sequoyah survives today. The land of Oak Knoll sat undeveloped during the Great Depression until it was sold to the United States Navy for a medical hospital in 1942. The nearby San Leandro Naval Hospital allowed the Navy great efficiencies of scale.
The Navy sold the San Leandro hospital to a team of developers in 1964, paving the way (quite literally) for the development now called Sequoyah Hills. The City of Oakland extended Keller Avenue in 1970 to allow the neighborhood the easy freeway access it enjoys today.
